ANTHONY STARR YACHT DESIGN JOINS BUIZEN YACHTS
Anthony Starr Yacht Design has been engaged by a number of name boat manufacturers and private clients to produce designs for new and refitted yachts. In recent years Anthony had been engaged by Warren Yachts to produce the designs for the S77, S87 and S120 Sports Yachts which were all subsequently built and achieved industry recognized awards. Employed by Greenline Yacht Interiors and based in Dubai for most of 2010, Anthony worked as the Design Co ordinator for a number of super yacht fit outs in production including the 50m “Trinity” in the US and the 60m “ Coco ” by Lurssens. Anthony also consulted on yacht design projects in Hong Kong and New Zealand for Greenline during this period.
Anthony had previously been retained as the designer of the new Buizen 52 in 2009 when design works initially started.
In conjunction with the Naval Architects Peter Lowe and Will Hardcastle, Anthony was responsible for the superstructure, cockpit and deck layout of the 52 and has since been creating the interior arrangements and internal design of the 52 using sophisticated CAD 3D Modelling.
On returning from Dubai , Anthony commenced the construction design drawings for the 52's interior fitout in late 2010, and we were thrilled when Anthony agreed to join Buizen Yacht's full time team as our Chief Designer and Fitout Co ordinator on the new 52 in March 2011. |

THE NEW BUIZEN FACTORY
Only just completed in February 2010, the new factory extensions have certainly created a much more efficient production facility.
The result being an additional 350m2 of factory floor plus an increase in mezzanine working areas. The real plus however is the creation of one large open floor area combining both the previously separated fiberglass and fitout shops, with no internal columns.
Overall working areas measure 1,600m2.
Inspections by interested parties are always welcome. |

CNC ROUTER TECHNOLOGY COMES TO BUIZEN YACHTS
On the 14th of January 2010 our new CNC Router was delivered.
In short, a CNC Router is a computer controlled cutting head that is attached to an overhead gantry that slides over a table (3.66m x 1.54m) which holds materials being cut using vacuum suction. The cutting head moves in three axis and cuts out a shape that was created in a CAD software file in either a single or three dimension shape.
From a boat builders application therefore you can design a hull shape, a bulkhead or any joinery item and the router will cut it reading directly from the software file. It will cut timber, fiberglass, corian, metal and many other materials.
It is incredibly accurate and its “nesting” software greatly reduces wastage.
Its applications are endless and it even has the capability to cut out 3 dimensional small part moulds.
The router has been busy of late cutting out the stations and longitudinal water lines for the new 52 hull moulds. |

On the 18 th of December 2009 Hull 35 “Dancing Feather” felt the water for the first time. After completing commissioning and sea trials her keys were handed to Richard who flew in from London. Richard described the feeling as surreal to be standing on his boat for the first time as he had only seen progressive photos of its construction having not been able to escape his London office to come to the factory while she was being built. He flew back to London a very happy man.
Richard is retiring in the middle of this year and he and Judy shall keep the boat in Mooloolaba when they return to Australia.

BUIZEN YACHTS ANNOUNCE THE NEW 52' PILOT HOUSE YACHT
Buizen Yachts are very excited about the announcement of the new 52.
Some 12 months after the announcement of the 60, the 52 now completes the company's plans to establish a 3 model Pilot House range of premium class world cruising yachts.
The 52 was designed and developed by the same design team for the 60 being Anthony Starr Design Group for the superstructure and interior and Peter Lowe Design for the hull naval architecture, sail plan and performance specifications.
The 52's design started with a clean sheet of paper, although it would be fair to say she takes her design and performance clues from the 60. In summary, the 52 is more a distilled version of the 60 rather than an upscaled version of the 48.
The 52's midship beam is 300mm wider than the 48, but it's the wider beam sweeping aft and the increase in topsides (hull) height of 250mm which when combined with the extra length, create an internal volume allowing incredibly generous living spaces.
In keeping with the preferred Buizen 48's layout of the forward owners stateroom, the larger aft sleeping cabins now have ensuites, the saloon is beamier and longer and the galley now spreads right across midships for increased services. On deck the cockpit boasts twin helm wheels with large entertaining areas and a clear walk through to the transom where a transom garage for dinghy storage is hydraulically operated to create a swim platform when down.
The increased sail plan sees the main sail as the dominant driving sail and the head sail more balancing. Halyards and sheets will run below decks back to winches in the cockpit providing clean and uncluttered deck space.
Clean, modern, innovative, European, performance, were design brief words that Anthony Starr, the team at Peter Lowe design and Buizen kept in mind throughout the design process. All agree that we have achieved this outcome on paper and performance theory.
Once coupled with the legendary Buizen build quality, she will be a special yacht indeed, and one that will be worthy to stand beside the iconic and legendary 48 Series.

BUIZEN YACHTS FACTORY EXTENSION BEGINS
On Wednesday the 21st of October 2009 work commenced on the Buizen factory to build an additional 400m2 to the existing premises.
The extensions are being undertaken to enable the tooling up and ultimately the construction of the new 52' and 60' models, and generally allow production on up to 6 hulls at any one time.
The works also provide for raising the existing roof enabling the interior working height within the factory to be increased to 6 metres.
For anyone familiar with the existing factory the work can best be described as extending the factory over the existing hardstand between the fiberglass and fit-out sections of the factory, or filling in the "L" between the two.
Work is expected to take 6 to 8 weeks and will be completed by mid December 2009. |

BUIZEN 40' MODEL ENDS
In the darkened early hours of Thursday 15th October the Buizen 40 moulds were quietly loaded onto a low loader and taken down to Kimbriki Tip to be crushed and used as landfill. The Buizen 40 will never be built again and as a result the model finished on Hull No.10.
It has been quite a few years since the 40 was last built.
The man hours invested in a hand built 40 were not to dissimiliar to those in a 48. Hence customers preferred the value seen in the 48 in comparison to the 40. We hadn't quoted a 40 in quite a while however we couldn't see much change out of $1m which we feel is to much for a 40 footer.
With the release of the new 52 and 60 we will now be offering a 3 model line up being the Buizen Pilot House 48, 52 and 60. |

BUIZEN YACHTS INVESTS IN A NEW CNC OVERHEAD ROUTER
Due to arrive in December and corresponding with completion of the factory extensions, Buizen Yachts will take delivery and install a new CNC Overhead Router which will no doubt have a major impact on the processes involved in the design and construction of our yachts and our factory operations.
Put simply the Router is a computer controlled cutting head which is suspended and moves backwards and forth over the top of a working table (3.6m x 1.8m), cutting out shapes as directed by its computer. The shapes are inputted from design software such as AutoCad or RhinoCad.
This technology has revolutionized all manufacturing industries which adopt it including boat building. For instance all ply templates which were such common place around our factory walls will now be digitized and held on the computers hard drive as a cut file.
After researching the market we have chosen a Tekcel Router "Verso" with a 300mm height gantry and a vacuum hold down table 3.66m x 1.54m with auto tool changing.
Its fist project will be to cut out hull and deck stations for the tool up of the new 52'.
This machine will also cut 3 dimensional shapes and will be able to produce moulds for all sorts of small parts limited only by imagination.
The costs associated with this type of technology are significant however and represent an investment upwards of $150,000.
We have no doubt the benefits both in construction efficiencies and design
freedoms will provide the returns very quickly and further support the reputation of Buizen Yacht's excellence. |

On the 22nd May at the Marriott Surfers Paradise, the Marine Industry's Gala Dinner was held to announce the prestigious National Marine Award recipients for 2008.
The Buizen 48 Series 3 not only won it's category for "Sailing Cruising Over 10m" but also took out the top award of "Boat Of The Year (Sail) 2008".
Eddy Buizen was on hand to accept the top industry award, and with his proud and teary wife Jeanette watching on, made a wonderful acceptance speech thanking all in the industry who had supported his company and his yachts over the last 30 years.
Steve Howe said, "It is a thrill for the company to have won the industry's top award and wonderful that the industry had finally bestowed upon Eddy Buizen the official recognition he so justly deserved".
"The Buizen 48 is a boat that is built to an outcome not a price point and the focus on the hand built quality and integrity that goes into every yacht is the passion that drives the company", Steve said.
Quality is not a new innovation and the mantra of "faster, cheaper, smarter" has never applied to Buizen Yachts. To build the yachts to the standard Buizens have become renowned takes time and commitment, and this approach is what continues to attract customers who are looking for more in a yacht than what a production yacht typically offers.
We are always confident that our boat's build quality was recognised as equal to the very best available anywhere else in the world, our customers told us so and now the National Award helps to confirm it. |
